Getting Found on Google Maps: Why Some Local Tradies Show Up and Others Don't

    6 min readLocal SEO

Try it right now. Grab your phone and search your trade and your town. "Electrician Caloundra." "Plumber Maroochydore." Whatever you do, wherever you are.

You'll see a little map with three businesses pinned at the top, and a list underneath. Are you in it? If you're not, that's worth sitting with for a second, because those three spots are where most of the local work goes. The people searching that aren't browsing. They need someone now, and they call one of the names they can see.

So why do some tradies show up there and others, often doing better work, don't show up at all? It's not luck, and it's not magic. There are a handful of things Google looks at, and once you understand them, the whole thing makes a lot more sense.

First, what even is that map bit?

That box of three businesses with the map is called the local pack. It's separate from the normal blue links below it, and for a tradie it's the most valuable real estate on the entire page. It's what shows up when someone searches with local intent, which for your trade is basically every search.

Getting into those three spots is the goal. Here's what actually decides who gets in.

    1. Your Google Business Profile

This is the big one, and it's free, and a lot of tradies either haven't set it up or set it up years ago and never touched it again.

Your Google Business Profile is the listing that feeds the map. It's got your business name, your phone number, your service area, your hours, your photos, your reviews. Google leans on it heavily to decide who to show. If yours is empty, out of date, or missing entirely, you're making it very hard for Google to put you in front of anyone.

The tradies who show up have usually got a properly filled-out profile. Right categories, real photos of their work, accurate service areas, the lot. It's the single highest-value thing you can sort out, and it costs nothing but a bit of time.

    2. Reviews, again

Yeah, reviews come up everywhere, and there's a reason. Google uses how many reviews you've got, how recent they are, and your star rating as a major factor in who ranks in the local pack.

It makes sense when you think about it from Google's side. It wants to show searchers businesses that other people have used and liked. A tradie with 80 recent five-star reviews is a safer bet to show than one with three from 2021. So the review pile that helps a stranger trust you is the same pile that helps you show up in the first place. Two jobs, one thing.

    3. How close you are to the searcher

This one you can't fully control, and it's worth understanding so you don't get frustrated. Google factors in how close your business is to the person searching. Someone searching in one suburb might see a different top three than someone searching two suburbs over.

That's why "why am I not number one" isn't quite the right question. You might be number one for someone standing near your base and further down for someone across town. What you can do is be clear and accurate about the suburbs you actually service in your profile, so Google knows where to match you. Listing the specific areas you work, rather than just your city, helps a lot here.

    4. A real website behind it all

Your Google Business Profile and your website work together. Google cross-checks the two. If your profile says you're a roofer in a certain area, and your website backs that up with content about roofing in that area, it adds up and Google trusts it more.

A site that's fast, works on a phone, and clearly says what you do and where you do it supports your local ranking. A missing or ancient website undercuts it. This is part of why "just having a Facebook page" only gets you so far. It doesn't give Google the same signals a proper website does.

    The honest bit about timelines

Here's where I'll be straight with you, because plenty of people in this space won't be.

This is not instant, and anyone promising you the top spot in four weeks is having a lend of you. Your Google Business Profile can start moving reasonably quickly, sometimes within a few weeks, because the local pack updates fairly often. But building a genuinely strong local presence, consistent rankings, a solid review base, all of it working together, takes months, not days.

That's actually good news, though. It means it's a real, defensible advantage. The tradie who sorts this out properly in your area gets a lead that compounds over time and is hard for a competitor to just buy their way past. Slow to build, but it sticks.

Getting this working for your business

None of this is a secret, and a determined tradie can chip away at it themselves. Sort the Google Business Profile, chase reviews, get the service areas right, have a decent website behind it. It's all doable.

The reason most don't is time. You're on the tools all day, and this stuff sits in the "I'll get to it" pile forever. That's the gap we fill. We set up and optimise the whole local presence, the profile, the reviews system, the website, so you actually show up when locals search, instead of leaving it on the to-do list.
